Ajax star’s advice to youth: Listen, work hard and focus on education

Hlatswayo kicked off his career for Ajax Cape Town in 2009 in a quarterfinal match win against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 Tournament in Johannesburg. He was promoted to the professional level from the ranks of the club’s youth academy after years of great playing for both local and national youth teams.

GroundUp: What other teams have you played for?

Hlatswayo: Senaone Gunners (amateur side) and before that, the Ajax Youths.

GroundUp: Ajax has gone through a tough time. How has that affected you?

Hlatswayo: No, the situation hasn’t affected me, and the team and I are still strong.

GroundUp: Soon Ajax will be playing Liverpool. How do you feel about that match?

Hlatswayo: I am looking forward to the Liverpool game. We are hoping to create another good profile just like when we played against Manchester United before.

GroundUp: What are the challenges you faced in your soccer career?

Hlatswayo: The challenges I faced were more personal than in my career. I left home at a young age and had to stay with people I didn’t really know.

GroundUp: What are your dreams for the future?

Hlatswayo: I would love to play in one of the top leagues and even get a contract overseas.

GroundUp: What message would you like to give to the youth?

Hlatswayo: It’s very important for young players to understand they need to stay disciplined all the time. They must also remember to listen, work hard, and focus on education.
