UCT union declares victory in salary negotiations
Management agrees to original 6 to 7% increase
UCT’s Employees Union has declared a victory in salary negotiations with the university which has agreed to implement the offer made in October last year.
The university presented a revised offer of an increase between 4.8% and 5.2% in December last year, compared to the original offer of increases between 6 and 7%. The revised offer was made following the protests for fees to fall.
This resulted in a dispute between the Employees Union (EU) and the university, which GroundUp reported.
The union consists of UCT’s professional, administrative, support and service staff. It does not include academics; they are represented by the Academics Union.
Outsourced workers working for companies contracted to UCT are to be brought onto the university payroll following an agreement with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union last October. UCT is the only Western Cape university that has committed to ending all outsourcing of work. The first workers are expected to sign their new employment contracts by June.
