Answer to a question from a reader

If I retire early due to ill health, will I still receive a pension?

The short answer

If you are a member of a provident fund, your disability or ill health benefit is treated as a retirement benefit.

The whole question

Dear Athalie

If I applied for early retirement on the grounds of ill health, will I still receive a pension when I reach retirement age (65)? Will it be paid as a lump sum?

The long answer

If you are a member of a provident fund and you retire due to ill health or disability, you are entitled to receive a retirement benefit. Your disability or ill health benefit is therefore treated as a retirement benefit.

After 1 March 2021, the rules changed for provident funds: as a result, it is no longer possible for provident fund members to take their entire ill health or disability benefit as a lump sum. One third of it could be paid out as a lump sum and the remaining two thirds be paid out as a monthly pension.

But if the total value of your fund is less than R247,500, you will be able to take out the whole amount as a cash lump sum.

You could ask the Human Resources Department at your work to contact your fund and find out how much the monthly payment would amount to, and how much the lump sum would be.

Wishing you the best,
Athalie
