The long answer
It should be possible for you to get into a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) College with an adult matric level 3, and perhaps also some universities, through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and mature age exemptions.
TVET colleges focus on practical skills training. They generally accept students with Grade 9 or higher, and Level 3 is considered equal to Grade 11. The False Bay College and West Coast College are examples of TVET colleges in the Western Cape.
Universities generally require a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with specific subjects, but they may accept mature-aged students (23+) who don’t have an NSC, through RPL. RPL includes work experience and informal learning and helps to assess whether a student has the necessary knowledge or skills for studying at university.
The University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) may accept mature-aged students after assessing them through RPL.
Some universities offer bridging courses to help students prepare for university-level study. For example, UWC has an RPL Portfolio Development Programme (PDP/PDOP) which takes place during April to October each year. Each PDP candidate/participant is required to attend compulsory webinars/workshops and mentoring.
But the main point is that all the TVET colleges or universities have their own specific admission policies, so you would need to check on the admission requirements for each one that you are interested in.
The CPUT sets out the following steps to get started, but they are probably useful steps to follow with all the colleges or universities:
Choose your qualification: Select the specific program or degree you are interested in.
Check specific requirements: Review the admission requirements for your chosen course, including subject requirements, APS scores, and any additional documentation.
Gather your documents: Prepare all the required documents, including certified copies of your ID, academic records, and any additional requirements for your specific program.
Apply online: Submit your application through the CPUT online application system.
Follow up: Track the progress of your application and respond to any requests for additional information.
Apply for residence (if needed): If you need on-campus accommodation, apply for a residence place
Wishing you the best,
Athalie
