Answer to a question from a reader

When will I receive the money government promised essential workers?

The short answer

There isn't much information on how this will be done.

The whole question

I work at a supermarket chain as a security guard. Unfortunately, I did not receive the money that the government promised to give us as essential workers who earn less R6500. I don't know where to go or who to ask with regards to why I still haven’t received the money. Every time I ask my boss about the money, he tells me that they’re working on it, but I still haven’t received anything

The long answer

On 23 March President Ramaphosa announced that people earning less than 6500 a month would get an extra R500 as a wage subsidy from April to July. It seemed as if this would be done through a wage subsidy to employers, but there were no actual details given.

Unfortunately there still doesn’t seem to be any information about how this will be done, so it may be that your boss is right when he says they are still working on it.

Hopefully it won’t take too long before this is made clear.
