Answer to a question from a reader

What can I do if I appealed but still have not received my R350 Social Relief of Distress grant?

The short answer

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the appeal, they say you can take it to the High Court for a judicial review.

The long answer

If your grant application was declined, you needed to appeal ideally within 30 days of getting a declined status, but before 90 days. The appeal goes to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). ITSAA checks and revalidates your information (including income or alternative financial assistance) with various databases used by SASSA. It takes 60 to 90 days for ITSAA to review the appeal. After the appeal has been reviewed, SASSA then communicates the outcome to you electronically.

To check your SRD appeal status, go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ on the DSD website.

  • Make sure you have your ID number and the phone number you used to apply handy.

  • Please click on the above link. Please enter your ID number and phone number in the spaces provided.

  • Click on the “send pin” button.

  • You will receive an SMS alert containing the pin code within minutes.

  • Submit the pin code you received in the space provided.

  • You can check the status of a month by choosing it from the form.

  • You need to send an appeal for each month you were declined.

A pending appeal will require you to wait until the decision is made. If declined, you cannot appeal again, but if approved, you will have to wait until the payment date for payment to be made.

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the appeal, they say you can take it to the High Court for a judicial review.
